FUIS representative visits Italian Cultural Institute, Melbourne, Australia

Tell the Italian Cultural Institute, Melbourne, about new translations of Italian works into English to bring to Australian audiences

New IIC Director Laura Napolitano

FUIS made an Italian connection down under: the Italian Cultural Institute (IIC) in Melbourne, Australia, is a natural piece of home for any visiting or resident Italians. The institute is near Melbourne’s beautiful Botanical Gardens, where FUIS representative Katie Webb met the new Director of the IIC, Laura Napolitano, to tell her about FUIS’s work. Laura was second in command at the IIC in Paris before starting her post at the beginning of November. She was busy designing next year’s programme, working in a team of just two full time and two part time staff, forming partnerships with organisations in Melbourne with whom IIC can collaborate.

Laura had the impression that not many Australian publishers (only two or three) produce English translations of books written in Italian, the publishing situation in Australia making it hard to acquire the rights to do this. She wanted to know about new English translations of Italian works to introduce to Australian audiences. IIC was looking forward to hosting an event with Francesca Cavallo, co-author with Elena Favilli of the international bestseller Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, on 19th December.

Laura also plans to invite an Italian graphic novelist to participate in Melbourne Writers Festival taking place in August and September next year, reflecting the current popularity of graphic novels in Italy. Laura hopes she can bring more Italian music and photography in Melbourne. The IIC also offers an extensive schedule of Italian language classes. IIC is an international cultural haven for Italians, Australians and other visitors alike – do visit if you are in town!Botanical Gardens in Melbourne, Australia
